For $150, a chat bot called Ailira will help you make a will — and since the service began in November last year, hundreds of people have used it.

Ailira is the creation of South Australian lawyer Adrian Cartland. He has established an office in the Northern Territory which is promoted as a ‘Law firm without lawyers’. With plans to expand the service on the east coast of Australia, regulators have had to ask themselves how the service fits into legal practise regulations.

Mr Cartland believes it’s more akin to the do-it-yourself paper will kits stocked at your local newsagency, and it falls under the heading of what’s known in the law world as “legal stationery”.

According to Mr Cartland, using a chat bot to make a will is a better option than a will kit, because help is at hand for clients with queries.
